College Park UMC CDC uses a child sensitive approach to early childhood learning and teaching. We believe each child begins to learn from the moment they enter God's world and that each caregiver is a teacher to that child. We rejoice in each child as a gift from God. We believe that parents are the child(ren)'s first teacher and we are committed to working with parents through direct communication and family support.

Our staff create classroom environments which promote learning through playful, adventurous, activities - inviting and holding children's attention while engaging all their senses. We believe children learn best when they are ready to learn, not pushed to learn, and that physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual development are as important as academic development.

We believe children learn by doing (hands-on, interactive education) with a healthy balance of child-initiated and teacher-directed activities on a daily basis. Research shows us that children are better able to retain information when it is presented to them in a contextual format and makes a connection with prior knowledge. For this reason, our curriculum centers around monthly themes. Instructional material, in all disciplines, is presented within the context of familiar themes such as the Rainforest, Space Travel, Dinosaurs, Barnyard Friends, Travel, etc. Teaching within these contexts provides students with optimum opportunities for learning and long-term retention. Weekly lesson plans include Circle Time, Whole and Small Group Activities, Language Development, Music/Creative Movement, Christian Education, Art, Fine/Gross Motor Skill Development, Cognitive Development, and Social/Emotional Development and are designed to best stimulate age-appropriate skill development at every age.
Our current curriculum, Funshine Express, guides our staff by providing appropriate activities which build self-esteem and enthusiasm for learning.
Funshine Express Program Goals:
  • The curriculum will be based on current research and sound educational theories of early childhood learning and development.
  • We will provide a range of hands-on, interactive materials allowing children to experiment and explore their surroundings.
  • The activity and project suggestions provided in our kits are alighted with specific Learning Goals and Objective.
  • The program will encourage involvement of family members in each child's learning.
